Tips For Sleeping With Your Dog In Bed (Without Ruining Your Sheets)

Do you love sharing your bed with your dog? You're not alone. For so many of our customers, there's nothing better than curling up next to your pup at night... even if it might lead to some bedding issues.

With the right bedding and care routine, you can enjoy all the benefits of dog cuddles in your bed without sacrificing cleanliness and comfort. Here are our top tips for sleeping with your dog in bed (without sacrificing your sheets).

Invest in Washable Bedding

Dogs bring so much love to your home - but they also bring dirt, stray fur, and mess. Our number one tip for keeping your bed clean and fresh is to invest in high-quality, durable, washable bedding. Having the right essentials that will last and can be frequently washed makes all the difference.

Look For A Washable Duvet Cover

If your dog sleeps on or near your bed, we always recommend using a duvet insert with a removable duvet cover on your bed. This option is the easiest to keep clean while still staying warm at night - simply take the duvet cover off and wash, leaving your duvet insert nice and clean.

For fabrics, we recommend a natural, breathable fabric like cotton, which is both durable and beautiful. Cotton percale is an excellent choice - the fabric is tightly woven, smooth, and strong enough to withstand everything from paws to frequent washings (while still feeling soft!). Avoid fabrics like silk or velvet, which can easily snag with dog's claws and might be dry clean only.

As for colour or pattern, we always recommend dog owners look for mid-toned neutrals (think grey, beige, blue) or subtle patterns (checks, stripes, block prints), which do a great job of hiding stray fur or paw prints than deep, dark tones or bright white.

Add a Protective Blanket or Throw

If frequent washes aren't your thing or you're looking to protect your bedding, try layering a washable blanket, coverlet, or throw blanket on top of your bed. Not only does this add a stylish barrier to your bed, but it gives your dog a designated spot of their own.

Look for blankets made from cotton or linen, especially ones with texture like waffle or quilting - these are naturally hardwearing and can withstand sharp claws. Bonus - their relaxed style is perfect for dog-friendly beds. Don't forget to check the care instructions first to make sure it's not dry-clean only; you're looking for something that can be washed weekly or bi-weekly.

Laundry Care is Everything

Even with all of the right bedding layers in place, frequent laundering is essential when you share your bed with a pet. A natural, hardworking laundry soap is best; gentle on your skin (and theirs), effective at removing dirt and odours, and gentle on your bedding's fibres. Harsh detergents can weaken fabrics over time, so investing in the right laundry soap is an investment in the longevity of your bedding.

Tips for a Better Night's Sleep With Your Dog

If you're sharing your covers with your pup, incorporating a few small habits will help to make it extra restful:

  1. Create a designated spot - Train your dog to sleep on a blanket or at the foot of the bed to help protect your sheets and bedding.
  2. Stick to a washing routine - Weekly laundering keeps allergens, fur, and odours at bay.
  3. Choose breathable fabrics - Dogs radiate heat, so using 100% natural fibres (cotton, linen, bamboo, modal, etc.) will help you both to stay cool.
  4. Mind allergies - Vacuum and wash bedding regularly to reduce dander and pollen your pup may carry indoors.
