Q & A: What is a Matelassé?

Au Lit Q&A

Q: What is a Matelassé?

A: Matelassé is a heavy, thick textile that appears to be padded, but actually has no padding within the fabric. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched French quilts. This look is achieved using a jacquard loom or quilting machine. The beauty of a light weight matelasse is its versatility. A matelasse blanket can be used decoratively at the end of your bed, it can be pulled over the entire bed for extra warmth, and they also make the perfect summer blanket.

We use matelasse fabrics to create many of our Coverlets and Shams. Recently, we've introduced more pre-washed matelasses, as part of our Lavato collection, which have a much more relaxed vibe.
