Cottage Trends Summer 2019

So far, 2019 has already welcomed a number of design trends, but this year, there’s been a dominant overarching theme in design: nature. The theme of ‘biophilia’ (the idea that humans yearn for a connection to nature) has surfaced this year, a timely topic due to the growing concerns of climate change. In the design department, 2019 has embraced all things natural and has favoured raw finishes over polished appearances and bohemian style over Mid-Century aesthetics.

In cottage country, inspiration from the outdoors comes naturally. Summer homes are surrounded by natural elements and city-dwellers often escape to lakeside abodes to slow down and connect with nature. In terms of design, cottages are the perfect place to implement raw elements. Here are a few 2019 design trends you can introduce to your cottage this summer:

Sustainable Materials

One of the most straightforward ways to engage with nature through design is buying eco-friendly products. At Au Lit, we pride ourselves on providing quality sustainable linens. Our Organic 240TC percale is made of 100% organic cotton and is certified GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). This collection is sewn right here in Canada and is dye-free, making it a perfect match for anyone who's as passionate about natural products as they are about slipping into impossibly soft sheets. As an added bonus, this collection comes in a 100% cotton storage bag (eliminating the need for plastic packaging).

Bohemian Accents

Bohemian style is laid-back and naturally harmonious with raw elements, making it a welcome aesthetic for nature-inspired decor. Our Beach House Pom-Pom Throw has a lighthearted boho vibe that is well-suited for any lake house. The fluffy tassels on this seasonal throw add fun flair while the crisp stripes are classic and subdued. As well, the natural feel of this piece reinforces a relaxed indoor-outdoor atmosphere.

Raw Textures

Decorating with naturally-textured materials is an impactful way to introduce outdoor elements to interior spaces. Linen has a raw texture that lends itself well to sustainable spaces. Our Belgian Linen Towels are a cottage staple that couple comfortable lakeside living with nature-inspired style. Keep your summer home linen closet stocked with these understatedly chic towels this summer for content cottage guests.

As renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright said, “study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” Connect with Mother Nature this summer and enjoy incorporating these design trends into your summer abode!
