Between the Sheets

Wedding Registry Trends

We've noticed that more couples seem to be moving away from single, traditional registries - for items precious and rarely used - in favour of multiple, more out-of-the-box registries that are a little more practical. Given that you spend about a third of your life in bed, it's no surprise that linens have recently become one of the top trends in registries. (In fact, according to Weddingbells Canadian Wedding Stats 2012, 86% of brides say bed and bath linens are on their registries!) Needless to say, we're very excited about that!

So excited in fact, we thought it would be fun to share our top registry picks:

Re-Organizing your Linen Closet

Ever notice how good you feel after de-cluttering a space and re-organizing it? It can be totally therapeutic, right? Linen closets are especially prone to disorganization - between sloppily folded fitted sheets and mismatched sets, your linen closet can quickly become a disaster zone. (Confession: mine is stuffed with mattress pads rolled into balls, baby sheets I won't part with, and every pillow cases I've ever owned. Which is, like, hundreds.)

So where to start? Purge, purge, purge! Here's a good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used something in the last 6 months (unless it's your Grandmother's heirloom sheets or a special embroidered set from your trip to Italy!), it's time to let it go. There are plenty of charities like the Salvation Army and city shelters that will gladly take them off your hands.

Labelling your shelves is also a great way to maintain organization. Imagine how wonderful it would be to have all of your bedding divided by size - queen, king, twin, double; by item - flat sheets, fitted sheets, etc; or even by bedroom. It will also make it easier for family members to find what they're looking for without destroying all your hard work.

There's really nothing quite like a beautifully made bed with fresh linens, or a pile of warm-out-of-the-dryer towels. Creating an organized and clutter-free space for your precious linens is a quick and rejuvenating project for 2012. Enjoy!

Start the year off right by flipping your mattress!

I realize we're already almost half way through January, but it's never too late to share a good tip. While it's recommended to flip your mattress once a month, I think most of us rarely remember to do it at all. So, here's your reminder!

Flipping your mattress regularly can increase its lifespan and maintain its comfort. The less flipping you do, the more likely you are to cause a permanent sag. This is especially common with couples in the middle of the bed where the bodies meet. Lumps or sags create uneven surface area, and can actually be a precursor for more serious injuries, not to mention less restful sleep.

Flipping a mattress can be difficult depending on the size and weight, so make sure you have someone to work with. If you have a pillow top mattress, you won't be able to flip your mattress, but turning it will be as beneficial.

Happy flipping!

Great Ideas: How to pamper your guests...

I'm sure you've all experienced both ends of the spectrum when it comes to being a guest. I always appreciate the extra little details which make me feel right at home. Over the years, I've developed a small repertoire of some of my favourite pampering ideas and want to share them with all of you now. Feel free to share yours as well, I'd love to know what you do when your guest room is occupied!

First, I like to include a small treat of some sort and some freshly cut flowers on the bedside table. It's a beautiful way to kick off their stay.

Make sure their toiletries are stocked. You don't want them running out of toilet paper or having to ask for towels. In case they've forgotten anything, it's a good idea to include everything from toothpaste & soap, to shampoo & hand cream. I also like to leave an extra waffle bathrobe hanging in the room, which is a real crowd-pleaser. And I always use Washed Cotton scented soaps, and also like to give the room of a spritz of Washed Cotton room spray.

Next is the bed! Obviously I like to provide my guests with a wonderful night's sleep. Having a featherbed on the guest room bed is one of the best ways to give guests a luxurious night's sleep. I promise they will thank you! (I especially recommend the featherbed if the guest room mattress isn't the greatest. It will transform the sleeping experience without having to replace the whole mattress).

I also like to include 2 pillow options (soft & firm). This will guarantee a good night's sleep for your guests. And a lot of people prefer sleeping with more than one pillow, so they'll be thrilled with the hotel-like hospitality!

And finally, I recommend keeping an extra blanket at the foot of the bed. If your guests get cold, they can easily grab it. If they're too hot, they can remove the duvet and just use the blanket. All these little details are sure to make your guests feel special. Then you just have to make sure they wake up to some warm Montreal bagels and fresh O.J and you're grand!

Hope you've appreciated my tips & tricks....I'd love to hear more from all of you. Leave a comment or let me know on Twitter or on Facebook!
