The secret's out.... Fouta towels have arrived, and we're obsessed! Chances are you've heard of fouta towels (or possibly their alternate names, Turkish towels or Hammam towels), and wondered... what exactly are they, and what is the best way to use them? The truth is... we use them for EVERYTHING! Far from just a towel, we think they're the ultimate lifestyle essential.
Fouta towels originated in 19th century Syria, where they were used by men and women to cover their bodies while at the public baths. Lightweight and typically woven with a thick or thin striped pattern, these towels are famous for their chic fringed edges. The foutas on the market today are woven in the same manner and style as traditional Turkish weavers, but have been updated in a rainbow of colours and designs.
Upon looking at them, you may think that foutas are good for one thing and one thing only: as a towel. After carrying them in the store for several years, we've tested them out and discovered that they're useful for so much more - they're our go-to for the summer months.
Because they're light, they dry very quickly; this combined with their ultra-large size makes for a perfect beach towel. We've also used ours as a summer scarf or pashmina on cold summer nights, a picnic blanket for outdoor concerts, a tablecloth for the cottage, and even as a throw to accent a bed or couch.
